Giardia is a microscopic parasite that can infect the intestines of both dogs and cats — and in some cases, humans too. It spreads easily through contaminated water, surfaces, or contact with infected stool, making places like dog parks, kennels, and areas with poor sanitation higher risk. We also tend to see a rise in cases during rainy seasons.

Symptoms to Watch For

Pets with Giardia may experience:

• Diarrhoea (often with a strong smell or mucus)
• Vomiting
• Lethargy
• Weight loss

Some pets may not show any symptoms at all but can still pass the parasite on to others — including people and other animals in the household.

Diagnosing Giardia

Giardia is diagnosed through a stool sample. This is usually done in-clinic, although in some cases the sample may be sent to a lab for further testing. Because the parasite isn’t always present in every sample, multiple tests may be needed to confirm a diagnosis.

Treatment and Prevention

The good news is that Giardia is treatable with prescribed medication. We may also recommend anti-diarrhoea medication or a temporary special diet to support your pet’s recovery.

To help prevent reinfection or transmission:

• Wash your hands thoroughly after cleaning up after your pet
• Disinfect food and water bowls, bedding, and toilet areas
• Pick up pet waste promptly
• Avoid allowing pets to drink from puddles or shared water bowls in public areas
