Did you know that dental disease is one of the most common health problems seen in dogs and cats? In fact, it’s estimated that around 80% of dogs and 70% of cats over the age of three show signs of periodontal (dental) disease.
The surprising part is that many pets don’t show obvious signs of dental pain. They often continue eating and behaving normally, making dental disease easy to overlook. That’s why regular dental checks are so important. They allow us to detect problems early and help keep your pet comfortable and healthy.
What is Periodontal Disease?
Periodontal disease is a progressive condition that begins with the build-up of plaque on the teeth. If plaque isn’t removed, it hardens into tartar. This irritates the gums and causes inflammation (gingivitis).
Without treatment, the infection can spread below the gum line into the tissues and bone that support the teeth. This advanced stage, known as periodontitis, can lead to bone loss, loose teeth and significant pain.
Unfortunately, the effects don’t stop in the mouth. Advanced dental disease can also result in tooth root abscesses, fractured teeth and oronasal fistulas (an abnormal opening between the mouth and nasal cavity). The bacteria associated with periodontal disease can also enter the bloodstream and may contribute to changes in important organs such as the heart, liver and kidneys.
Signs Your Pet May Have Dental Disease
Many pets suffer in silence, so it’s important to watch for subtle signs, including:
- Bad breath (halitosis)
- Reluctance to have their mouth checked
- Red, swollen or bleeding gums
- Yellow or brown tartar build-up on the teeth
- Excessive drooling
- Pawing at the mouth or face
- Difficulty chewing or eating
- Changes in behaviour, such as becoming quieter, less playful, irritable or reluctant to eat hard food
Prevention is the Best Medicine
The good news is that periodontal disease is largely preventable with regular care.

- Enable us to grade your pet’s dental disease from 0 to 4.

- Are carried out under a general anaesthetic with full monitoring.
- Include a thorough oral examination and dental X-rays.
- Finish with a complete scale and polish to safely remove plaque and tartar from above and below the gum line.
Home dental care
Looking after your pet’s teeth at home plays an important role in reducing plaque build-up and maintaining oral health between professional cleans.
- Regular tooth brushing remains the gold standard.
- Dental diets, approved dental chews and water additives can also help.
