February is the month of love.
While Valentine’s Day often focuses on romantic relationships, at My Family Vet we are reminded every day of another kind of love – the deep, loyal, unwavering love people share with their pets.
We truly believe that pets are cherished members of our families. They share our homes, our routines, our holidays, and often our beds.
They grow up with our children, they comfort us through life’s challenges, and they are with us in our happy moments. But what is it about pets that captures our hearts so completely?
Unconditional love
Perhaps the most powerful reason we love our pets so much is that they love us unconditionally.
They don’t judge us for our bad days, our messy houses, or our mistakes. They don’t care what we look like, how we dress, what we earn, or what kind of car we drive. To them, we are their whole world – and that devotion is incredibly special.
Dogs, in particular, form very strong attachments to their humans. They are naturally social and bond deeply with their family group. They just love spending time with their pack – going on walks, chasing balls, getting belly rubs, lying under the desk when their humans are working or cuddling up on the sofa when watching TV.
Some cats are more independent, but they often tend to choose their person and that bond can be equally strong. Other cats can be very affectionate – curling up on laps and snuggling under the blankets.
The “rock star” welcome
There’s nothing quite like coming home to a pet who greets you as though you’ve been away for years – even if it’s only been 10 minutes.
It can’t help but make you smile. Tails wag wildly and “zoomies” are performed. Some dogs talk or proudly bring you a toy. Cats rub up against your legs. It’s a full “rock star” welcome, every single day.
In a world where so much is complicated, pets remind us that joy can be simple. Your presence is enough.
They cherish the small things
Pets live very much in the moment.
A walk around the block, a scratch behind the ears, lying in the sun in the back yard, or a favourite treat can make their entire day. There’s something refreshing about watching an animal delight in such simple pleasures.
We could learn from them to slow down, to step outside, to breathe, and to appreciate the little things.
Good for our mental health
The emotional benefits of pet ownership are well recognised.
Many animals are remarkably attuned to our moods and feelings, offering loyal companionship and helping to ease loneliness. Their steady presence can calm anxiety and provide comfort during times of stress.
Increasingly, pets are also included in therapeutic settings, supporting people through serious mental health challenges.
And sometimes, it’s simply their silly antics and endearing quirks that bring laughter and lightness to everyday life.
Good for our physical health
Pets don’t just help us emotionally – they help our physical health too.
Dogs encourage us to get outside and walk regularly, and even playful indoor cats can keep us active and engaged.
They can also help bring structure and routine as they rely on us to look after them. Studies have shown that pet ownership can be associated with lower blood pressure, improved cardiovascular health, and increased overall wellbeing. In caring for them, we often end up caring for ourselves as well.
Family in every way
We celebrate their birthdays. We include them in family photos. Sometimes they come on family holidays. We buy toys, treats and outfits for them. We rearrange schedules to make sure they’re cared for. We worry when they’re sick or injured and are relieved when they’re feeling better. We grieve deeply when we lose them.
That’s because the bond is real. The human-animal bond can be incredibly strong, and as such, the mutual love is also very real.
This February, we celebrate love, and that includes the special connection you share with your pet. Pets don’t understand Valentine’s Day – but they understand love. And they give it to us freely, every single day.
From all of us here at the clinic, thank you for trusting us with the care of your cherished family members. We are privileged to be part of their lives – and yours.
