The summer season is just around the corner, and with the warm weather comes a few things to keep in mind for our furry family members!
From the scorching heat to outdoor adventures, here’s how to make sure your pets stay safe, comfortable, and protected all season long.
Beat the Heat
Summer can be hard on our pets, with heatstroke, dehydration, and even burnt paw pads being common concerns. Try to keep walks for cooler times of the day, like early morning or late evening, and provide plenty of water and shade. Remember, if the pavement’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for their paws!
Pesky Parasites
Unfortunately, summer brings more bugs too. More than just being annoying, bugs can be of harm to your pets. So make sure you keep your pets protected from parasites like paralysis ticks, fleas, and heartworm (carried by mosquitoes) to avoid serious health issues. My Family Vet offers comprehensive parasite prevention to help you stay ahead of these pesky visitors.
Watch Out for Toxic Creatures
Australian summers are known for some toxic encounters! Brown snakes, cane toads, redback spiders, and whitetail spiders can all be harmful to pets and are common in our area of the world. Keep a close eye on curious noses in the garden and bush areas, and contact My Family Vet if your pet is showing any unusual symptoms.
Safe Swimming Adventures
Many dogs love a good swim, but not all are natural-born swimmers. If your dog is a water lover, make sure you keep a watchful eye, especially in unfamiliar spots.
Additionally, when swimming at the beach, avoid letting them drink salt water as it can lead to upset stomachs and dehydration. That makes for a pretty nasty ride home!
With a little preparation, summer can be a fun and safe time for everyone, pets included! If you have questions on keeping your pet protected this summer season, reach out to My Family Vet – we’re here to help.
