Kitten Care 101: Feeding, Litter Training and Early Health Tips

Bringing home a kitten is a little bit like welcoming a tiny tornado wrapped in fur. One minute they are asleep in a sunbeam, the next they are climbing your curtains with Olympic ambition. But alongside all the fun and cuddles, those early weeks are incredibly important for setting your kitten up for a healthy, happy life.

Here are a few of the biggest things we encourage new kitten owners to focus on in those early months.

Feeding Your Growing Kitten

Kittens grow rapidly, which means they need a diet specifically designed for their age and development. A high-quality kitten food provides the right balance of protein, fats, vitamins, and minerals to support healthy bones, muscles, and immune systems.

Young kittens generally do best with smaller, more frequent meals throughout the day. Fresh water should always be available too, even if your kitten seems more interested in batting the bowl than drinking from it.

If you are unsure what to feed, your vet can help guide you based on your kitten’s breed, age, growth, and individual needs.

Litter Training Basics

The good news? Most kittens pick up litter training surprisingly quickly. Cats naturally like to bury their waste, so providing a clean, accessible litter tray usually gets things off to a good start.

A few simple tips:

🐾 Keep the litter tray somewhere quiet and easy to access
🐾 Scoop it regularly because kittens can be surprisingly fussy about cleanliness
🐾 Use a litter with a soft texture while they are young
🐾 Praise calm, positive behaviour rather than punishing accidents

If your kitten suddenly stops using the tray, it can sometimes signal stress or even an underlying health issue, so it is always worth checking in with your vet.

Early Health Matters

Those first vet visits are about much more than vaccinations. Early health care helps us monitor growth, check for parasites, discuss nutrition, and answer all the little questions that pop up along the way.

Vaccinations, flea and worm prevention, desexing discussions, and microchipping are all important parts of protecting your kitten as they grow. Early socialisation is also key. Gentle handling, positive experiences, and exposure to new environments can help kittens grow into confident adult cats.

Most importantly, remember that every kitten is different. Some are bold little adventurers. Others take life at a slower pace and need a bit more reassurance. That is perfectly normal.

At the end of the day, raising a kitten is not about perfection. It is about building trust, creating routines, and enjoying the wonderfully chaotic journey of watching them grow from tiny fluffball into beloved family member. 🐾
