Understanding Anxiety in Pets — and How You Can Help

Understanding Anxiety in Pets — and How You Can Help

As part of Dog Anxiety Awareness Week, we’re reminding pet owners that emotional health matters — for all species. Just like people, pets can experience anxiety, and it’s more common than many owners realise. Loud noises, changes in routine, unfamiliar environments or being left alone can all trigger stress. And when left unmanaged, anxiety can impact your pet’s overall wellbeing.

Spotting the Signs

Anxious behaviour varies from pet to pet, but some of the most common signs include:

  • In dogs: pacing, excessive barking, panting, shaking, destructive behaviour, or following you around.
  • In cats: hiding more than usual, overgrooming, vocalising, toileting changes, or scratching furniture.

Unusual or sudden shifts in behaviour are often the first clue.

What Causes Anxiety in Pets?

Some pets are naturally more sensitive, but anxiety is often triggered by:

  • Separation from their owner or family
  • Loud noises like fireworks or storms
  • Visits to the vet or groomer
  • Changes in their environment
  • The arrival of new people or animals

Even seemingly small changes can throw some pets off balance.

Helping Your Pet Feel More Secure

Mild anxiety can often be managed at home. Try building predictable routines, offering regular enrichment and exercise, and providing a quiet, comfortable space where your pet feels safe.

Supportive tools can also help, including:

  • Natural calming supplements like Zylkene
  • Pheromone diffusers such as Feliway (for cats) or Adaptil (for dogs)
  • Behavioural training and desensitisation techniques

With consistency and patience, many pets show real improvement.

When to Get Help
