Veterinary nurses play a vital role in every clinic – and we’re lucky to work with some of the absolute best, like our very own Gemma Harrison.

A life-long love for animals

Gemma was your classic animal-obsessed child, and loved nothing more than heading to the zoo to spot her favourite critters, learning about wildlife in school, or helping care for animals on the farm where she grew up.

She knew she wanted a career working with animals every day, and began studying veterinary nursing while working as a kennel hand at a general practice in Ashgrove.

A calm, kind presence

Thanks to her kind nature, passion for helping animals and determination, Gemma eventually worked her way up to Head Veterinary Nurse at her previous practice, before transferring to a specialist referral centre and then taking a career break to start her family.

With a Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing, her special interests include anaesthesia and pain management – and she aims to treat every pet as if they were her very own, while ensuring the owners feel informed and supported every step of the way.

We’d worked with Gemma before starting My Family Vet, and knew she’d be the perfect addition to our practice. She agreed, saying: “I knew I’d be joining an excellent team committed to providing an exceptional standard of care to patients and clients.”

Life outside the clinic

Life is busy with her two children, but Gemma and her husband dream of adding a furry family member to their pack someday soon.

Until then, she loves all the strokes and cuddles she gets every day from the My Family Vet pets – and often thinks back to that young girl who dreamed of working with animals.
