Our five favourite dog-friendly hikes near Brisbane

Our five favourite dog-friendly hikes near Brisbane

Why go hiking alone when you could take your dog and have double the fun?

As the weather starts to cool down and the great outdoors calls your name, it’s the perfect opportunity to grab the lead, don some sturdy shoes, and go on an adventure with your furry friend.

Here in Brisbane, we’re lucky to be surrounded by incredible options. From dappled bush and rugged mountain tracks to breezy coastal paths, there’s no shortage of places to explore together.

Below, we’ve shared five of the My Family Vet team’s favourite dog-friendly walks – with a few vet-approved tips along the way to keep tails wagging for all the right reasons.

1. Mount Cooth-tha

A Brisbane classic for good reason. With a network of trails ranging from gentle strolls to more challenging hikes, Mount Coot-tha is perfect for dogs (and humans) of all fitness levels. The shaded bush tracks are especially lovely in the cooler months, and there are plenty of spots to pause, rehydrate and take in the views.

Vet tip: Bring water for both you and your dog, and stick to marked tracks – it helps protect local wildlife and keeps your pup safe.

    2. Bunyaville Track, Samford

Tucked just outside the city, Bunyaville Conservation Park is a favourite for those who love a good bushwalk without venturing too far. Think winding trails, tall gums and plenty of scents to explore – a delight for curious noses.

Vet tip: This is a popular spot for ticks and other parasites, especially after rain. Make sure your dog is up to date with their prevention, and give them a quick check over when you get home.

    3. Federation Walk, Main Beach, Gold Coast

If your dog loves the ocean air, Federation Walk Coastal Reserve is hard to beat. This easy, flat track winds through coastal bushland alongside the beach, offering a relaxed walk with plenty of sea breezes.

Vet tip: Sand and saltwater can be tough on paws and skin. A quick rinse after your walk can help prevent irritation – especially for dogs prone to allergies

    4. Gorge Walk, North Stradbroke Island

For something a little more special, a trip to North Stradbroke Island is always worth it. The iconic Gorge Walk offers breathtaking ocean views, and if you’re lucky, you might even spot dolphins or whales during migration season.

Vet note: Some sections of the surrounding national park areas have restrictions on dogs, so it’s important to check signage and plan ahead.

    5. Point Arkwright Trail, Sunshine Coast

Head from Point Arkwright towards Coolum along a winding shady bush track that offers regular glimpses of the ocean. Then nip down to dog-friendly Third Bay beach for a sniff around the rock pools and a play on the sand – an especially beautiful option for sunrise or sunset.

Vet tip: Be mindful of your dog’s fitness level – even gentle walks can be tiring for older pets or those not used to regular exercise.

Wherever you choose to explore, remember to pack water, bring a lead, and take things at your dog’s pace.

And most importantly, enjoy sharing the adventure together. Wherever you go, your dog will be thrilled to be by your side.
